The Y & L Ecology Garden was established in 2018. Plantscapes are utilized to support
bio-diversity, absorb and filter rainwater and create naturalistic perimeter borders. It is a pesticide and fertilizer free haven for pollinators. The soil holds a myriad of root systems harmonizing below. Native plants co-mingle with plants reclaimed from the property.
The streetside garden base was created with large, 30+ year-old lavender plants, 'Perovskia' sage and 'Karl Foerster' feather reed grass relocated from the front of the property. Plants with culinary properties were transplanted from the courtyard. Over 30 additional plant specimens have been integrated into the beds. The seasonal bloom cycle starts with early spring, low, curbside plantings. The garden's center, showcases a purple-ranged, blossom ‘stream’ from late spring to summer. Seasonal progression leads towards the sidewalk into late fall with tall, structural, light-catching, fall plantings and grasses, interspersed with milkweed.
Public engagement, social engagement and editorial interest is drawn by the siteing of the garden. It offers an accessible understanding of individual and public environmental stewardship. It offers an example of the contemporary world planting movement toward the duality of planting with ecological sensitivities and artistry.
